9 Easy Ways to Add Color to Your Home (Without Painting a Wall)

If you love the idea of adding color to your home but the thought of painting an entire wall feels a little intimidating, I get it. I used to feel the same way! Now, painting walls is actually one of my favorite ways to transform a space, but I also know you have to start somewhere. So if you’re not quite ready to commit to a bold wall color, here are nine easy ways to bring more color into your home and start getting comfortable with it.

1. Bring in Color Through Art

Art is such a personal way to bring color into your home. You don’t have to paint your walls to make them colorful: a large piece of art, a beautiful tapestry, or even a gallery wall can completely change the feel of a space. Instead of choosing something simply because it “matches,” look for pieces with colors you genuinely love. And the best part? You can always move them around or replace them as your style evolves.

2. Swap Your Lampshades

A lampshade is an easy detail to overlook, but changing it can completely change the look of a lamp. Try a colorful fabric, a pattern, or a shade in a richer version of a color already found in the room.

3. Add Pillows

Pillows are one of my favorite ways to experiment with color because you can mix different shades and patterns without changing the rest of the room. Try introducing a color you've been wanting to use and see what you think.

4. Try Colorful or Patterned Curtains

Curtains take up a surprising amount of visual space, so they can have a big impact. A soft pattern or beautiful color can bring warmth and personality to an otherwise neutral room.

5. Add Accent Furniture

If you're ready to go a little bigger, bring in one colorful piece of furniture. An accent chair, ottoman, or even a small bench can become a beautiful focal point without requiring you to change the entire room.

6. Layer in a Rug with Color

A rug is a great way to bring color into a room without making it the main focus. I like choosing rugs with subtle variations of color and pattern, then pulling some of those tones into the rest of the room through pillows, art, or accessories.

7. Paint or Wallpaper the Inside of a Cabinet

This is such a fun way to use a color you might not be ready to see on your walls. Paint or wallpaper the back of a bookcase, the inside of a cabinet, or even the back of a built-in for an unexpected little surprise.

8. Paint Your Trim

This one is a little more adventurous, but still not a wall. Instead of keeping all your trim white, try a color that complements the room. You can go subtle with a deeper version of your wall color or make a statement with something completely different.

9. Let Your Accessories Do the Work

Think beyond the traditional “decor” pieces. Colorful ceramics, faux florals and stems, lamps, books, baskets, and collected objects can all add little moments of color throughout your home. You may already have more color than you think! You just need to bring it out.
